Board honors retiring trustee, swears in new member

The Indiana University Board of Trustees approved a resolution during its November meeting honoring retiring trustee Michael J. Mirro. The board then swore in incoming trustee Isaac Torres, an IU South Bend alumnus and entrepreneur.

Mirro, who was first appointed to the board in 2014, earned his M.D. from Indiana University in 1974, specializing in cardiology with a clinical interest in cardiac electrophysiology. He previously practiced with the Parkview Physicians Group; is co-director of the Midwest Alliance for Health Education; and serves as the senior vice president/chief academic research officer of the Mirro Center for Research and Innovation. Mirro has also received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from the state of Indiana.

Torres is president and CEO of InterCambio Express, a company he developed the idea for while pursuing his MBA at IU South Bend.

His own experience transferring money back to his family in Mexico inspired him to create a business plan for an internet-based money transfer service as part of a class project. Torres made that plan a reality in 1999 by founding his company just before receiving his MBA.

“With his record of service and accomplishment in business, Isaac Torres represents the very best of Indiana University,” said W. Quinn Buckner, chair of the Board of Trustees. “His perspective and leadership will make him a crucial voice on the Board of Trustees, and I look forward to working with him to advance the mission of our extraordinary university.”
