Top 7 campus safety tips from IUPD

The IU Police Department is dedicated to ensuring IUPUI’s campus is a safe and welcoming place. Here are some safety tips and resources that students need to know:

1. Get to know IUPUI as your new home

Buildings, parking garages and lots all have a name or number. Start to learn the campus and the streets that run through it. In an emergency, you will be able to clearly articulate where you are on campus so emergency personnel can respond quickly.

2. Be aware of your surroundings

As you are walking around campus, keep your eyes and ears open. Don’t get so distracted by your phone that you don’t know what’s happening around you. If you are listening to music, consider using only one earbud so you can still hear sounds like emergency vehicles or someone yelling for help.

3. Don’t leave your belongings unattended

Take your personal belongings with you everywhere you go. They could be stolen if you leave them in a public area for even a couple of minutes. If you notice unattended items, report them to IUPD.

4. If you see something, say something

It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our campus safe. If you see something that is suspicious or feels out of place, notify a university official or the police.

5. IU Notify

Students can sign up to receive IU Notify alerts by going to one.iu.edu and searching “Emergency Notification Settings.” These alerts will notify you of any serious or continuing threat on campus. You will also receive crime notices in compliance with the Clery Act.

6. SafeWalk Program

IUPD offers a free escort program for students, faculty and staff. If you don’t feel safe walking to your on-campus destination, give IUPD a call at 317-274-7233, and an officer will walk with you.

7. Rave Guardian app

This is your one-stop shop for all things public safety on campus. The Rave Guardian app offers a virtual safe walk feature, an anonymous crime reporting system, quick links to 911 and IUPD, and emergency alert notifications.
