IUPUI is committed to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive community. Students who have experienced sexual misconduct – such as sexual assault, dating violence, stalking or sexual exploitation – have many easily and privately accessible wellness and support resources available to them on campus.
“Indiana University is committed to the safety and well-being of all members of the university community,” said Jennifer Kincaid, university director of institutional equity and Title IX. “IU takes all reports of sexual misconduct seriously and our first step is always to reach out to students and offer support and access to the wide array of comprehensive and confidential resources available.”
For individuals who have experienced an act of sexual misconduct or have been a witness, the university’s Stop Sexual Violence website includes a comprehensive list of the resources available, many of which are confidential and available 24 hours a day.
Following an act of misconduct, victims and witnesses have a number of options available on campus, including:
Contacting the police
If you or someone else is in danger, call or text 911 right away. If you are underage and under the influence, Indiana’s Lifeline Law assures that you will not be prosecuted if you report a crime or request emergency medical assistance.
The IU Police Department at IUPUI responds to incidents on campus and can be reached by calling 911.
Getting medical help
Those in need of medical care can visit IUPUI Campus Health, or visit a local emergency department.
Reporting the incident
You can report an incident to campus authorities using an online form. IU makes every effort to respond to all reports of sexual misconduct in a timely, efficient and equitable manner. Reporting the incident to the police does not mean you have to seek a criminal case.
Finding support
There are resources available on campus, including the Office of the Assistant Director of Interpersonal Violence Prevention & Response. As a confidential employee, they will not disclose your identity to university officials or law enforcement without your consent. The advocate can be reached by emailing saadv@iupui.edu or calling 317-274-5715. You can also contact the Office of Student Conduct.
If you aren’t sure what to do about something that happened to you or another person, you can make a referral to Student Advocacy.
People on campus are encouraged to follow general safety tips to increase their safety and that of others, including paying attention to your surroundings, walking with a friend and staying in well-lit areas at night.
The university also offers resources to employees, including training opportunities for those who are designated responsible employees. Employees who have been victims of or witnesses to an act of sexual misconduct can contact the Office of Equal Opportunity or connect with resources through the Employee Assistance Program.
